University Response to Epic Storm

Extraordinary effort by university snow response teams had the campus open less than 72 hours after the end of the storm, clearing 2.6 million square feet of roads, 1.7 million square feet of sidewalks, and 2.7 million square feet of parking lot surface. Taken together, Facilities and its partners moved approximately 76 metric tons of snow, sleet, and ice.

Successful Fleet Management Pilot Launch

The Fleet Management telematics pilot was successfully implemented across F&CO, with hardware installed on all 138 department vehicles along with training on system functionality, safety features, and data interpretation.  The first set of operational dashboards is in development to provide real-time visibility into vehicle usage, safety alerts, idle time, and maintenance needs.  Automated notifications are under development for idling expenses and critical events (excessive speeding, engine fault codes), as well as methods for associating trip data with individual operators.

Policy on Policies Updated

Enterprise Risk Management has updated the university’s Creating and Maintaining University policy (Policy 1101), along with associated procedures and policy website, in partnership with the Provost’s office. In addition to modernizing the policy to create a stronger, more transparent framework for how policies are maintained going forward, this update wasn’t just procedural—it was designed to build consistency, strengthen accountability, and treat policy management as an essential component of institutional risk mitigation.

“New Year, New Me” Event Brings in Donations

Sustainability held a winter Patriot Packout event in partnership with The Ridge and Housing & Residence Life. Attended by almost 350 attendees, the event brought in 500 pounds of donations, exceeding all expectations.

Energy Management Brings in Savings

In January, George Mason received notice that it exceeded its energy curtailment commitment to the PJM demand response program testing event last fall, with an overall performance of 119%. From these results, the University will receive $333,133 in payments for this fiscal year. The success of this testing event was the combined effort of our Central Heating & Cooling Plant, Energy Management, and Building Controls teams, and the university’s commitment to responsible stewardship of resources.

Enterprise Resource Planning Modernization Launched

George Mason has launched its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) assessment project in early January. The team is partnering with Attain to evaluate current processes in Banner and determine the best long‑term system to support HR, Finance, Student, and Financial Aid operations. The resulting roadmap will guide future investment decisions, align with enterprise initiatives planned for FY27–28, and help move the university from reactive maintenance toward a strategic, future‑focused operating environment.

Mason Dining Halls Receive Green Restaurant Association Certification

Mason Dining achieved Green Restaurant Association (GRA) Certification across all dining halls, exemplifying the university’s commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible operations. In addition, The Mason Mensch expanded its inclusive dining offerings by earning halal certification alongside its existing kosher certification, further supporting diverse dietary and cultural needs across campus.

All three George Mason campuses were once again recognized as Best Workplaces for Commuters, highlighting continued excellence in commuter support, transportation programs, and sustainable commuting initiatives that benefit students, faculty, and staff.

High-Energy Events Ring in Homecoming

Homecoming Week launched with a pair of Johnson Center events. On January 29, Rally at the Court brought students together for live music by The Green Machine, performances by the Masonettes and Cheer Team, and appearances by the men’s basketball team, along with banner voting and a spirit wear fashion show. The Johnson Center Atrium also hosted the 2nd Annual Joust, where Men’s Wrestling staged a high-profile matchup against Rider University. The event drew a packed student crowd and a national audience on ESPN+.

Third Collect the Spirit Headbands Dropped

The Mason Bookstore launched the third Collect the Spirit headband drop at the Spirit Trailer during the January 10 rivalry game against VCU. Momentum from the mobile retail experience continues to build, with spirit trailer sales already surpassing total sales for last year. In partnership with Athletics and the Office of University Branding, ABS Marketing and the Bookstore launched the new mobile merchandise trailer and the Collect the Spirit fan-engagement campaign. The initiative continues to debut exclusive game-day drops and amplify school spirit across home basketball games this season.

Print and Mail Services launched new smart lockers in the print hub, expanding secure, self-service pickup options and improving convenience and efficiency for the campus community.

ITS Website Refreshed and Accessible

The ITS website is now 99% accessible, the product of work by the ITS team and partners. The major visual and functional refresh of the public ITS site improved user navigation and content clarity, long-term maintainability, alignment with university brand guidelines, and ADA Title II accessibility standards. The ITS website’s accessibility rating is now 99%.

A&O Celebrates 2025 Winter Graduates

More than 4,900 students were recognized at the degree celebrations, representing 87 countries and 38 states. Ali Manouchehri, BA Philosophy ’99, who co-founded a business from his room in Dominion Hall, served as the Commencement speaker. Remarks were also delivered by student speaker Ayham Elayan, a bioengineering graduate and Honors College student, and by Scott Hine, BS in Decision Sciences ’85, before graduates joined a global alumni network of more than 250,000.

Exploring Repurposing Data Center Waste Heat

On December 10, George Mason hosted a District Energy and Data Center Workshop at the SciTech Campus, focused on capturing and repurposing waste heat exhausted by data centers. The university is currently exploring opportunities to partner with these data centers, which have proliferated in the area. While this process is established in Europe, it is not currently employed at any of the Northern Virginia data centers. The conference was organized by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, International District Energy Association, and Ramboll.

Ongoing Public Safety Improvements

In Fall 2025, the university made a number of physical security enhancements on our campuses, including the implementation of an event security rubric, securing a third-party contract for as-needed additional event support, deployment of vehicle barriers for outdoor venues, and procuring a weapons detection system for events and venues. These reflect the continuous, collaborative efforts of Risk, Safety, & Resilience, in partnership with University Events, University Police, University Life, Auxiliary and Business Services, and others across our campuses, dedicated to keeping our community safe.

TimelyCare offers free 10-session counseling services for employees with no insurance requirements.

TimelyCare Launches for Faculty and Staff

Risk, Safety, & Resilience officially launched TimelyCare to provide George Mason employees with free, confidential mental health and well-being support, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

SMS Service Disabled on University Phones

To protect the university community from unwanted text messages and smishing attempts, SMS texting was disabled on Vonage, the university’s phone service provider. This proactive measure reduces exposure to malicious SMS attacks. Reinstatement of SMS service will now require a Pinnacle ticket submitted through your telecom coordinator, ensuring tighter control and oversight. Microsoft 365 Storage Quotas Implemented

ITS continued implementing new storage quotas to manage growth within the Microsoft 365 environment. Phases included applying quotas in Exchange (email and calendar), creating a MyHub request process for additional MS Teams and SharePoint spaces, and investigating retention policies. In 2026, ITS will focus on refining account lifecycle management and respective policies. This effort improves efficiency and safeguards resources. See the M365 Storage Roadmap for updates.

Mason Dining achieved Green Restaurant Association Certification for all four dining halls on campus, marking a significant milestone in sustainability, environmental stewardship, and responsible dining operations. The Green Restaurant Association is a national nonprofit that evaluates dining programs on an extensive set of environmental criteria, including water and energy efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable food purchasing, and pollution prevention. Mason Dining’s certification reflects the coordinated effort of dining partner, Chartwells, and Auxiliary and Business Services to implement sustainability improvements.

Facilities Kicks Off Fleet Management Pilot

In December, Facilities & Campus Operations launched a GPS pilot program to improve the university’s vehicle management program, with the installation of Geotab GPS tracking units in vehicles and golf carts. This provides real-time insights into vehicle locations, usage, maintenance needs, and performance, which will help make informed decisions, extend the life of our vehicles, and deliver consistent, reliable service to the George Mason community. The six-month Facilities and Campus Operations pilot lays the groundwork for a broader university rollout, with pilot results and next steps expected in summer 2026.

Improved EagleBank Arena Concessions and Merchandise Access

EagleBank Arena now offers contactless checkout systems and roaming concession hawkers during events, powered by Mashgin contactless systems. These improvements create a seamless and convenient concessions experience for guests while increasing operational efficiency and driving additional revenue. Outside the venue on game days, George Mason Bookstore fans can visit the new mobile merchandise trailer, launched alongside the debut of the Collect the Spirit campaign, creating a high-energy retail experience that expands on-site merchandise access for fans. 

Patriots Gather at Home to Support Men’s Basketball on the Road

George Mason Nation gathered on December 6 for the Patriot Perks Watch Party at Banditos to support the men’s basketball team on the road against Virginia Tech. A partnership between Auxiliary and Business Services, Athletics, and the Alumni Association, the event drew more than 125 attendees, fostering strong student engagement and off-campus partnerships that enhance the George Mason fan experience.

University Completes Wi-Fi Transition to Eduroam

ITS simplified George Mason University’s Wi-Fi network in fall 2025 by fully transitioning to eduroam and retiring MASON-SECURE. Eduroam has served as Mason’s primary Wi-Fi network since 2022, offering secure and seamless access across all campuses and at hundreds of participating institutions worldwide. With MASON-SECURE permanently shut down on December 19, the transition streamlined connectivity, strengthened security, and ensured consistent access for students, faculty, and staff both on campus and at partner institutions. A&O Staff Recognized for Years of Service

More than 100 members of the A&O team were recognized for service milestones at Green and Gold days in November. Led by ITS’s John Hanks, who hit the four-decade mark this fall, the A&O team members’ collective milestones topped 1,400 years of service to the university.

Next-Generation Network Upgrade Completed

On November 23, George Mason completed the final step in a multi-year effort to modernize its core network, the high-speed data backbone that interconnects university campuses and buildings. Whether accessing Wi-Fi, wired connections, or university systems, this upgrade delivers dramatically faster connections across the university and between campuses. The new network provides a strong foundation for advanced research, digital learning, and seamless collaboration, positioning George Mason to confidently meet future technology demands. 

George Mason Provides Free Vaccines to Help Keep Our Community Healthy

On November 6, Risk, Safety, & Resilience – Employee Health & Well-Being held a flu, COVID-19, pneumonia, and RSV vaccine clinic at the Population Health Center. Ninety-one people received vaccines at this free event for employees and their families. 

SciTech Hosts Visits From White House Task Force and Virginia House Appropriations Committee

On November 12, SciTech welcomed the White House FIFA World Cup 2026 Task Force and more than 500 public safety officials for a full-day program focused on national public safety preparedness for next year’s US-hosted tournament, and a live drone demonstration.

The Virginia House Appropriations Committee held its annual retreat in the Life Sciences and Engineering Building on November 18. The retreat brought together more than 40 members of the Virginia House of Representatives to discuss state budget matters and drew more than 100 participants, with appearances from President Gregory Washington and Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger.

Crash Center Relocation Ends University Presence in Commerce Building

The Center for Collision Safety & Analysis has relocated to Katherine G. Johnson Hall and vacated the Commerce Building, which the university sold last year and has since leased. Led by Real Estate Strategy & Operations, the sale and subsequent move are part of the university’s efforts to leverage existing space and minimize external leases. The move was supported by ITS and Facilities in advance of the lease ending on December 15.  

ITS Donates Laptops to Office of Military Services

ITS donated 15 laptops to the University's Office of Military Services in early November. These repurposed, fully functional laptops help the department continue its mission in the absence of the resources necessary to purchase new computers. This is part of ITS’s ongoing efforts to maximize the value and lifespan of existing resources while supporting the important work that is happening across the university.

University Welcomes Lara Spader as Senior Director of Energy & Sustainability

This new position is responsible for energy management, the combined heating & cooling plant, and sustainability within facilities & campus operations. Spader brings vast experience as a program and project leader for sustainability, energy efficiency, and decarbonization initiatives. She recently oversaw a $20 billion portfolio of innovative, high-impact decarbonization projects, including negotiations with Fortune 500 companies.

User Authentication Process Streamlined

It is now one step quicker to sign on at George Mason. In November, ITS removed the attribute release display from the single sign-on authentication process. User consent choices remain stored as a browser-specific cookie, and login processes are determined by each application vendor, so ITS determined that there was no impact on user security.

Regional Shuttles Return 150+ Students Home for the Holiday

Parking & Transportation successfully transported more than 150 students to and from their Thanksgiving destinations via regional shuttle routes spanning from Virginia Beach to New York City. The service provided a safe, affordable, and convenient travel option for students heading home for the break.

Student Centers Holds EPIC Halloween Events

Student Centers kicked off the Halloween events, starting with the second annual Graveyard Smash concert on October 29, featuring performances by three student bands and an a cappella group. On October 30, the Johnson Center Atrium hosted a Halloween Costume Contest in collaboration with shopMason’s Halloween Kiosk Day, along with a campus-wide Pumpkin Decorating Contest showcasing creative entries from faculty and staff departments. The winning department received a gelato party for their team, generously sponsored by Mason Dining (Chartwells). These events were part of the EPIC (Engaging Programs and Initiatives Committee) initiative, which provides students with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities.

Piloting Bag Scanners to Enhance Physical Security

Risk, Safety, & Resilience’s Emergency Management & Fire Safety piloted x-ray bag scanning technology at the Student Career Fair in Dewberry Hall, part of the university’s continued efforts to further enhance security at events. This technology is being considered for future use as it facilitates quick ingress into events while allowing students to carry their personal effects.

Facilities and Campus Operations held a town hall on October 20, focused on improving organizational culture with a focus on trust, transparency, excellence, and professional growth. Topics included department goals, upcoming initiatives, and discussions on, resources, recognition, and retaliation.

AMPLIFY Welcomes 1,000 Plus Attendees to Connect with Campus Units and Local Partners

shopMason hosted its annual AMPLIFY event on September 30 at Merten Hall Lawn, bringing together the George Mason community for an afternoon of engagement, entertainment, and connection. Almost 20 campus units and community partners participated, showcasing their services and offerings to students, faculty, and staff.

The event drew more than 1,000 attendees, making it one of shopMason’s most successful campus events this year. Highlights included a walking taco bar, a live DJ, and a variety of giveaways and interactive displays that encouraged attendees to explore all that shopMason and its partners provide.

Azure Migration Project Completes Robotic Process Automation Deployment

The project team has successfully deployed both an attended (user login) and unattended Robotics Process Automation resources for Fiscal Services. This will enable the eventual decommission of on-site desktop machines, instead of running in Windows Azure environments. This complex effort was made possible by the teamwork and commitment of ITS.

Request Tracking System Workflow Implementation

The RTS subsequent contract workflow went live on October 15. The new workflow modernizes the process to produce subsequent contracts for benefitted instructional/research/clinical faculty, postdoctoral research fellows, research staff, and administrative/professional faculty. There is a more efficient process that reduces turnaround time, risk, and cost to the university.

Fuse at Mason Square Wins P3 Environmental Impact Award

The Fuse building was selected by a panel of esteemed judges for the Environmental Impact Award at the P3 Awards ceremony in New York City on October 23. The judges noted the project’s comprehensive approach, spanning optimized systems, smart controls, climate resilience, and a living-lab experience. George Mason’s partner Edgemoor also won the prestigious 2025 Developer of the Year award for Fuse, as well as projects with the University of Nevada, Reno and University of Kansas.

A&O Contributes to Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day

A&O leadership participated in the Faculty-Staff Enrichment Day on October 16th. David Farris spoke about how to participate in, structure, and maximize the productivity of university committees. Charmaine Madison joined Amarda Shehu to present a session on integrating AI that introduced PatriotAI and CoPilot, part of George Mason’s effort to foster responsible and innovative use of artificial intelligence across campus.

Campus-wide Printer Upgrades

In collaboration with Canon Print and Mail Services, Auxiliary and Business Services has initiated a major upgrade of George Mason’s campus printer fleet as part of a renewed contract agreement. This initiative will see more than 300 devices replaced across the university in stages over the coming weeks. The new devices feature a smaller footprint and improved energy efficiency, directly supporting the university’s sustainability goals, while also providing faster, more secure, and more reliable performance. This transition is designed to be seamless for faculty and staff, as all printer configurations and user access information will automatically transfer, requiring no action or reconfiguration from individual users.

Successful Implementation of Banner Self-Service 9 for Finance Module

Self-Service 9 (SSB9) for Finance was successfully launched on October 1. Led by the Enterprise Project Management Office, this upgrade delivers a refreshed interface, enhanced functionality, and new features that simplify and strengthen financial processes across the university. George Mason ITS was able to complete the roll-out of Patriot Web (Ellucian Experience) Banner 9 user interface as part of a long-sought-after enterprise user experience upgrade, in concert with the SSB9 Finance module for consistency. Retiring the SSB8 Finance Information tab is a crucial step towards full retirement of the Banner 8 platform elements still active in our ecosystem.

University Sustainability Hosts the Fall into Sustainability Fair

University Sustainability welcomed the George Mason Community to the Fall into Sustainability Fair in the Johnson Center Bistro. Faculty, staff, and students enjoyed activities and information, including opportunities for sustainability internships or to volunteer. A Patriot Packout Pop-up offered free household items and Halloween costumes while accepting donations, as the Greenhouse and Gardens Program gave away house plants and produce. The Sustainability Scavenger Hunt highlighted existing campus sustainability measures to win pumpkins and other prizes.

The 2025 Classroom Technology Refresh Project Completed

Thirty-seven George Mason classrooms have been modernized by upgrading educational technologies and creating state-of-the-art, innovative learning environments. ITS teams delivered advanced networking and instructional technology solutions, while the Facilities Department completed physical renovations. The project team coordinated planning, design, procurement, installation, and testing with campus partners, including the Provost’s Learning Environment Group and the University Registrar, as well as several external contractors.

Updating University Policy Process

The Policy Management Group is updating the university policy process for consistency, efficiency, and enhanced communication of policy changes, co-chaired by the interim vice president for enterprise risk management and assistant provost of academic affairs. The new policy process is anticipated to launch in early 2026 with broad communication to the campus community. The group also anticipates conducting a review of existing university policies to ensure they are on a consistent review cycle and reviews are to date, updated in alignment with changes in regulations, code or law, and consistent with other university policies.

Student Centers Hosts First Outdoor Movie Night

Student Centers hosted its inaugural Movie Night, celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Toy Story" with an outdoor screening on Wilkins Plaza. Participants enjoyed complimentary popcorn and gained practical experience in event production, including setup and operation of a flown truss system, daylight outdoor projection techniques, and real-time color uplight coordination to match film scenes.

Open House and First Move-in at SciTech Condos

George Mason held an open house in October for the new faculty and staff condominiums in the Innovation Town Center, adjacent to the SciTech Campus, as well as welcoming the first resident. The open house drew strong attendance and generated several completed applications, moving closer to the goal of filling the first 10 units. Guests enjoyed music, refreshments, and the opportunity to tour the new Tessa and Julianne condos that will help with the University’s commitment to affordable housing for faculty and staff.

Free Wellness Screenings

Risk, Safety, and Resilience’s Employee Health & Well-Being is offering free well-body screenings, a non-invasive body composition scan with personalized results, a complimentary blood pressure check, and a consultation with a medical professional. This analysis provides physiological metrics for evaluating overall health. All slots are currently filled, but additional appointments will open on the sign-up page in the coming months. This service is open to George Mason faculty and staff (including wage, student wage, and adjunct faculty).

Inaugural A&O Employee Picnic

A&O hosted its inaugural department picnic on September 17 in the Center for the Arts Lobby. A&O leadership served barbecue and sides to a stream of more than 300 employees throughout the three-hour event that featured cornhole and a raffle.

Successful Patriot Web Upgrade

Patriot Web, George Mason University's self-service site for managing personal, administrative, and academic information, was upgraded this month to a new, modern interface with improved navigation. A soft launch of the new environment was made available for use on September 1 at the Patriot Web login page. The prior version of Patriot Web was disabled on Tuesday, September 30.

Microsoft 365 Storage Update

ITS continues to implement new storage quotas to manage growth within our Microsoft 365 (M365) environment. The next phases include administering new email and calendar quotas, creating a MyHub request process for more MS Teams and SharePoint space, investigating M365 retention policies, and refining the account lifecycle process. AI Autumn of Literacy Kicks-off

On Tuesday, September 9, ITS hosted the inaugural Copilot Chat Prompt-A-Thon, marking the beginning of a series of AI-focused workshops and training sessions that will be offered throughout the academic year. The Prompt-A-Thon brought together students, faculty, and staff for an engaging introduction to Copilot Chat. Microsoft experts were on hand to guide participants through interactive demos and real-time exploration of this powerful generative AI technology.

Launch of Workshops to Address Top Enterprise Risks

Enterprise Risk Management workshops for the identified top enterprise risks for FY26-27 have begun to take place. These workshops are focused on refining risk definitions, describing risk drivers and current controls, and identifying top mitigation actions to address these enterprise risks. These workshops will continue throughout fall 2025.

Activities Community Wellness Center Building Substantially Completed

The new Activities Community Wellness Center has been substantially completed and is expected to be ready for use by mid-October following final safety inspections. The new 25,000 square foot facility features two full-sized basketball courts, other athletic courts, and meeting spaces for the university’s 350-plus student groups, as well as providing practice space for the Green Machine.

TimelyCare Well-Being Services for Employee

Risk, Safety, and Resilience is in the process of implementing TimelyCare well-being services for faculty and staff, which offers 24/7 virtual health and well-being services, fully independent of campus health and well-ness resources with no insurance required and no copays.

Employees can access immediate emotional support (TalkNow), scheduled mental health counseling, health coaching, self-care tools, and medical care for low-acuity issues. TimelyCare also provides a dedicated Guidance Line that faculty/staff can call to get expert help in identifying and connecting students in distress with appropriate resources.

This service is expected to be available to all employees by January 2026.

AI-Powered License Plate Recognition introduced at Mason Square

Parking Services introduced a new AI-powered license plate recognition system in the Van Metre, Vernon Smith, and Fuse garages that makes parking a faster, more convenient experience for the Mason community and visitors alike. Developed and operated by George Mason’s long-time partner, Metropolis, this cutting-edge platform makes parking seamless. Permit holders simply drive in and out as their license plate serves as their credential — no swiping or tickets required. Institute for Biohealth Innovation Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL) on the Science and Technology Campus supports infectious disease research and fosters collaborations with other national and global laboratories. The BRL operates as a central core facility to advance research and develop novel diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines against viral and bacterial infectious agents by a diverse population of internal and external investigators. The facility is capable of housing multiple species and has a variety of established animal models, with an emphasis on aerosolized exposures. The laboratory was issued no findings from the Center for Disease Control, a rare accomplishment that is reflective of exceptional teamwork across Facilities, Safety, Operations, Research, and students being committed to upholding the highest safety and research standards.

Campus and Facility Preparations Support Successful Fall Semester Launch

Extensive summer preparations resulted in a smooth start to the fall semester, with Facilities receiving 20 percent fewer work orders during the fall student move-in. Some of the preparation work completed included:

  • 5,000 residences readied for student move-in
  • Solar panel installation on the President’s Park Greenhouse
  • Combined heating and cooling plant chiller installed
  • 400 pounds of campus-grown produce redistributed
  • 11,000-plus pounds of Patriot Packout items re-homed
  • 38 tons of cardboard recycled from student move-in
  • 29 Classrooms refreshed
  • 139 elevator phones transferred to cellular service

A&O Holds Leadership Retreat to Shape Direction of Department

Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Julie Zobel hosted the first A&O leadership retreat for Administration & Operations (A&O) on August 7 and 8, gathering the department’s unit leaders and their direct reports at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. The 40-person group conducted Emergenetics teambuilding, organizational visioning, and identified priorities for the newly formed department.

SciTech Job Fair Draws More Than 1,400 Local Residents and Displaced Federal Workers

SciTech’s job fair on August 15, drew far more participants than expected, requiring additional space and support for the surprisingly high turnout. Held at the request of U.S. Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10), the successful collaboration provided support to the region’s workforce and strengthened community partnerships, while demonstrating the campus’s utility as a host for large-scale events.

University Affordable Housing Initiative Acquires Ten Innovation Town Center Condominiums

George Mason has closed on ten condo units in the Innovation Town Center, adjacent to the SciTech Campus, as part of the university’s $10 million commitment to making housing more affordable for faculty, staff, and graduate students. The units will be available below market rates, similar to Fairfax’s Masonvale housing, where rents were recently reduced. This initial acquisition strengthens Mason’s presence in the emerging Innovation District, with additional purchases anticipated to support long-term growth and engagement.

Updated Emergency Preparedness Training Launched

Annual mandatory Emergency Preparedness Training was updated and launched in August on MasonLeaps, the university’s online, self-service learning and performance system. Based on feedback from the university community, training is condensed, easier to navigate, and a test-out option is now included. These changes will reduce the time and compliance burden on faculty and staff and is expected to improve training compliance.

Canon Awarded Contract for University Print, Mail, and Copy Services

Canon USA, George Mason’s partner in print, mail, and copy services since 2016, has been awarded a new five-year contract that began on July 1, 2025, with an option for a five-year extension. The agreement includes a $150,000 signing bonus, and technology upgrades such as a refreshed multi-function-device (MFD) fleet, a new smart locker system in the HUB, cloud-based support, and Wi-Fi compatible devices.

Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center Sets All-time Annual Membership Record

Annual membership rates continue to grow at the SciTech center, closing out July 2025 with over 500 more memberships than in July 2024, and breaking the previous high membership watermark from 2019. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the center’s post-pandemic recovery, having achieved a positive net operating result for FY 2025. The growth is attributed to a concerted effort to increase marketing campaigns and community partnerships, while leasing underutilized space to generate revenue and provide enhanced offerings to members.

Emergency Risk Management

Risk, Safety, and Resilience Security Initiatives

Emergency Management and University Events partnered to implement a physical security rubric into George Mason’s event registration process, 25live. George Mason will pilot this security process enhancement in FY26 to determine security requirements for internal and external events, before establishing it permanently in FY27, incorporating learnings from the pilot phase.

A working group has been established to examine the installation, use, maintenance, and testing of panic buttons installed throughout the university; procedures will be produced to mitigate false alarms and improve the utility of panic buttons.

Patriot Packout 2025 Diverted More Than 17,000 Pounds of Reusable Items

During student moveout this spring and summer, Patriot Packout 2025 successfully diverted over 17,000 pounds of reusable items through reuse and food recovery and provided them to the George Mason and local community partners during, representing 30% growth over 2024 diversion statistics.

Patriot Packout 2025 also piloted new specialty waste reduction and recycling initiatives, in collaboration with the Recycling & Waste team, providing residential students access to specialty recycling streams. Part of George Mason University's year-round waste reduction and educational program, Patriot Packout reduces campus waste generation and provides students, faculty, staff, and alumni with opportunities to participate.

Successful Completion of RAMP Implementation Enhances Research Administration Efficiency and Compliance

George Mason has completed the multi-year implementation of the Research Administration Management Portal (RAMP), a collaborative effort by the Office of Sponsored Programs, Information Technology Services, and the Enterprise Project Management Office. This integrated system streamlines research administration by consolidating critical functions into a single platform, reducing duplication of effort and better supporting faculty and staff.

RAMP enhances compliance with sponsor regulations through automated workflows and reminders and improves reporting and decision-making by capturing research-related data in one system. The portal includes seven modules: Grants, Agreements, Safety, Conflict of Interest and Conflict of Commitment, Institutional Review Board, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and Payroll Certification. This milestone represents a significant advancement in George Mason’s research infrastructure and administrative efficiency.

Initiated Implementation of institutional Risk Management Information System (RMIS)

George Mason began implementation of a Risk Management Information System application, led by Operational Risk Management. The RMIS will manage and coordinate the university's risk and insurance-related information and will serve as a centralized platform for risk managers to collect, store, analyze, and report data related to business risk and insurance coverage. Having received approval from the university’s Executive Administration Domain Council, this application will facilitate decision-making, streamline workflows, provide better risk visibility, while reducing costs, improving compliance, and increasing efficiency.

Canvas launched to replace Blackboard

Milestone in Canvas Learning Management System Transition with Sunset of Blackboard

George Mason reached a significant milestone in its transition to Canvas, the new Learning Management System (LMS), when access to Blackboard, the previous LMS, was ended on July 15, 2024. Canvas was piloted in summer 2024, with instructors having the option to use either Blackboard or Canvas during the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters.

Development of FY26-27 Enterprise Risk Management Priorities

As part of the development of the Enterprise Risk Management priorities for FY26 and FY27, interviews with key university leaders have been completed. The interviews help update the university risk register, gain information about key components of top enterprise risks, and begin the process of identification of key mitigation actions to be taken to address enterprise risks for the next biennium.

Successful Stormwater (MS4) Program Audit

Department of Environmental Quality audited George Mason’s MS4 Program for compliance with state permit requirements. 132 of 155 audit questions were in compliance, with 22 deemed not applicable, and only one corrective action found, which will be addressed promptly. The results of the March 2025 audit were received on July 17, 2025.

Chartwells Higher Education Begins as New Dining Service Partner

After a two-year RFP process—including stakeholder interviews, focus groups, benchmarking, and review by a broad-based voting committee—George Mason selected Chartwells Higher Education to manage Mason Dining, effective July 1, 2025. As Mason’s largest outsourced contract, this 10-year agreement is projected to generate $455M in gross revenue, with a $116M return (25.5%) and $19M in capital investment.

Chartwells, a national leader in campus dining, was chosen for its strong residential dining program that aligns with the needs of our campus community. They succeed Sodexo, Mason’s dining provider for more than 30 years.

Monumental renews contract for EagleBank Arena entertainment services

Monumental Sports & Entertainment awarded contract to manage EagleBank Arena

Monumental, which has managed EagleBank Arena for the past 40 years, has been awarded a new five-year contract beginning July 1, 2025, with an option for a five-year extension. The new agreement includes priority blackout dates to support Intercollegiate Athletics needs, including basketball practices, special events, and postseason play.

The previous agreement generated $3.1M in university returns in FY24 and $2.5M in FY23. These returns are expected to grow under the new contract, which increases Mason’s minimum guaranteed payment. In 2024, the arena reached a record-high attendance of 623,000 guests, hosting 30 concerts and numerous athletic events—the most concerts since its 1985 opening.

Governor Youngkin announces $2.6 million Investment in Innovation District Anchored by Science and Technology Campus

The 3,800-acre Innovation District, led by George Mason in partnership with Prince William County and the City of Manassas, will accelerate scientific advancement, bolster startups and established employers, and create high-quality jobs.

Supported by a $2.6 Million GO Virginia grant and an additional $1.3 million in funds coming from local businesses, government and higher education partners, the funding will help launch the Innovation District and roll out programs aimed at making Northern Virginia a national hub for research-driven industries.
